Abstract: 

The sexual abuse of children is on of the 'new' epidemics of the last decade. In the light of the recent public debate about this topic, which is an area fraught with difficulty and controversy, it is interesting to review Kempe & Kempe's (1978) description of the sequence in which child abuse has been recognised in the community.
