Abstract: 

Those of us who undertake psychotherapy with seriously disturbed children and adolescents have for long done so with clear evidence that our activities were backed by sound confirmatory research.

In this paper an attempt is made to compare and contrast the effectiveness of the special services which were available in the north-east of England for children suffering from more serious degrees of psychiatric disorder.
